Montana McLean obtained her BSc in Marine and Freshwater Biology from the University of Guelph (Guelph, Ontario) in 2010. During her final undergraduate year, Montana worked with Dr. Robert Hanner and other researchers from the Biodiversity Institute of Ontario. For her Honour's project, Montana used mitochondrial DNA records from the Barcode of Life Database (BOLD) to identify unlabelled or mislabelled animal products being sold in markets across Canada, including some CITES listed species of shark and soft-shell turtle. In the fall of 2010, Montana began her MSc degree at Acadia University (Wolfville, NS, Canada; Coastal Ecology Lab) under the supervision of Dr. Michael Stokesbury and Dr. Michael Dadswell. Her MSc research focused on marine ecological processes and studying Atlantic sturgeon movement, behaviour and diet in Minas Basin, Bay of Fundy, Canada, through the use of acoustic telemetry and gastric lavage methods. Montana recently completed her PhD at Dalhousie University (Halifax, NS; Animal Ecology and Evolutionary Physiology Lab) under the supervision of Dr. Glenn Crossin and Dr. Matt Litvak (Mount Allison University, New Brunswick), where her dissertation research aimed to understand the consequences of recreational angling stress on the biology and movement of White sturgeon in the Fraser River, British Columbia. Montana's MSc and PhD research was supported by the Ocean Tracking Network (Halifax, NS) via funding from CFI and NSERCE and an Alexander Graham Bell Canada Graduate Scholarship awarded to her by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada. She currently holds a MITACS PDF fellowship with VEMCO and the Coastal Ecology Lab at Acadia University.
